now i'm confused.
people are now going for multiple careers; the first one for money, the second one for interest.
my interest in humanities apparently cannot fulfil the first one very much, and so there's no way I can let the first lead to the second, which is optimal.
should I shut out the options of banking/finance/management and just go for arts and social sciences only??
man, another dilemma.

been busy this week...and i guess such a hectic life will remain for the months to come.
until the end of the A levels, that is.
talking to wally everyday on my way home has allowed me to think about alot of things which I usually tend to neglect. probably i get to know myself better in the process. recent happenings have once again proved to me that i haven't changed one bit. that part of me i want to change so badly.
and i guess i have decided that doing what i want to do will come before the ideology of money.

i'm sure justin won't mind me publicizing his works...haha. and i'm surprised that his mandrin is better than his english. in written form at least. =)
there's a reason why i like to read his posts so much.

So much for a world class city.

Call Singapore a world class city? Think again.
Given that it's so difficult to find a public toilet (decent one I mean) in the wee hours of the morning, how can Singapore be one?
This morning, lucky me, my stomach started to ache terribly after I boarded the bus to school. It was so bad that I decided I needed to go to the toilet immediately, so I alighted at the bus stop closest to West Mall Shopping Centre. I ran towards West Mall, but found that it was locked. Desperate, I charged towards Bukit Batok CC, and realised it was locked too. And that means we have no access to the toilets.
Given such a situation, I had no options but to take a taxi to school, just for the sake of the toilet. If I had perserved and stayed in the bus, I would have reached school earlier. I'm not angry at the fact that I wasted $10.50 on the taxi, but rather at the appalling fact that there are no decent toilets around.
To those who ask, what about those kopitiam toilets? Well, I won't deny that they are available, but I'm against using them for such matters. Firstly because it's not appropriate to do such things at a place where people are eating, secondly because I'm very particular about toilet hygiene. And you know how dirty those toilets are.
So much for Singapore trying to brand itself as a world class city. It cannot even fulfil the criteria of having accessible and clean toilets.
6 years ago when I went to Europe, I was so impressed by their toilets. Although expensive (they cost 0.50 euros per entry), they were many of them, and most importantly, sparkling clean.
Singapore, it's time you caught up, seriously.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
Monday, July 14, 2008
Yes, I know I'm supposed to get on with my econs essay, but there's something which I want to record down somewhere.
It's something to do with what I did for gp today: Beauty.
We watched a video which argues that there is such a thing as universal rules which govern beauty. To those who think that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, the below arguments are really worth thinking about.
Firstly, scientists discovered that there's actually a mathematical ratio that governs things that we consider beautiful. The ratio is 1:1.618, and it holds true for many many things, examples include our teeth, the ratio of the length of our lips to our nose, etc etc etc. And when you do some manipulation, you can actually get a template of what they call a beautiful face. And guess what? Tom Cruise's face fits it perfectly.
Apart from humans, nature follow this ratio closely too. Processes ranging from the growth of flowers to the pattern of petals...the list is just far too long.
In addition, beauty is also closely related to our biological wants. We are especially attracted to features that represent youth (examples include big eyes, high jawbone, thick lips, even untanned skin), because youth represents good health, and that would mean giving rise to greater sex arousal. Before any one starts thinking dirty, this is primarily for reproduction.
There is also a distinction between what we perceive to be beautiful for adults and infants. For the latter, the features which attract us are those which make us want to protect the baby more.
So, while some may say the perception of beauty changes with time and culture, we cannot deny that there are indeed some universal rules that govern beauty.
Impressive eh?
Or at least I am impressed. LoL.
Back to work.

i'm once again feeling emo, but to balance things a little here, i will discuss more...serious issues here. lol.
well, comfort delgro group of taxis is going to implement a 30cents diesel surcharge...bus and MRT fares are going to increase in october...
everything is going up. but not wages, which have been eroded by inflation.
i guess it is fair to say that inflation is the most serious problem that we're facing, at least in the short run. People are demanding for higher wages to help them cope with the inflation, but the Minister of Finance is against it, citing the likelihood of a wage price spiral as the reason. Being an economics student in Singapore, I must say there's some validity in his argument.
Previously, the government did suggest a one-off increase in wages. But not many firms followed, of course. So much for the healthy tripartite relationship. So even if the government suggests a even greater increase in wages during a time like this, firms may choose not to follow it at all.
So what should the government do then? Nothing?
Unlikely. They have already said they will help the lower income group through the implementation of a variety of policies. But are they enough?
In my opinion, no. I come from a middle income family, I know how little a monthly disposable income of less than $3000 is to support a family of 3, what more say a family of 4 or 5. And we are already considered the lucky ones, who receive little, if any, help from the government. There are so many other families out there who survive on less than a thousand bucks every month. Sad to say, their main source of help is from charitable organisations, not the government.
The government should be more generous in helping the lower income group. They, too, are Singaporeans. They contribute to the economy, albeit in the most insignificant way, some may think. Yet, they are the ones left suffering in times of turmoil...
I once thought of Singapore following a minimum wage system like how Canada does. But given how vulnerable we are as a small and open economy, this probably isn't a good solution. This only means that the government should do more to help...
And not have people selling organs just to make sure they have sufficient cash to live by.
Initially, I thought that having a market for the sale of organs is fine. Since both the suppliers and the buyers benefit from it, why not?
On second thought, the issue isn't that simple to start with.
I will continue next time, if I have the mood.

before you know it, another week has passed.
and we're getting closer and closer to our prelims. -.-
lately i've the feeling of secondary school days, but not quite...it's similar, but not the same. looking back, i wish i could experience secondary school days again. Now, everyone have their own lives to lead, their own problems to settle...
what about myself? how much have i achieved in the time i spent in jc?
i'm not sure. i learn new things, but not as much as i did in secondary school. i guess my mindset has a role to play here, but it doesn't help if you are in an environment which...stifles your actions.
i am still me i guess, friends still matter alot to me. the worry that i have in my heart has lessened, but will never diminish...
and never will i experience the joy that i did with my sec 4 class...

haven't posted anything for a week or so...once again, many things have happened.and they're private matters, so...
i really wonder why i still have a blog. not many people read it, it's just a place for me to air my views. but never in great detail.
there're issues that attract my attention lately, like the sale of human organs, and xiaxue's latest case....
the joke from the case is this: you can't post your opinions on your blog. (that was why she was sued by dawn, or her agent, or both. but they settled it soon after)
then what the hell are blogs for?
well, people are weird creatures.
ok, this will be one of my suckiest post...i cant make it flow.
who cares anyway.
